    How Does Play Affect Learning

    kids learning
Child’s play is serious business! A report by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) named - , The Power of Play : A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children, talks about how and why playing (with parents and/ or peers) is pivotal towards building thriving brains, bodies, and social bonds in children. This research shows play can improve children's abilities and skills like-  plan, organize, get along with others, and regulate emotions, language, math and social skills, and even helps children cope with stress.
The natural curiosity and want to explore is an important factor that fuels learning in children. As they actively engage with and joyfully discover their world, children gain 21st century skills that increasingly call for teamwork and innovation. This learning is subtle, slow and long-lasting.

    Three Indicators of Playful Learning

    • Choice -

When kids take up the mantle to entertain themselves, they end up learning the most about themselves! Kids tend to set goals, develop and share ideas, make rules, negotiate challenges, and choose how long to play.
    • Wonder -

Kids ask questions. They love to know why things are the way they are. Kids explore, create, pretend, imagine, and learn from trial and error.
    • Delight -

They learn the most when they are happy. Silly pretend play guides innovative and creative thinking. It helps their imagination flourish.

    Values That Children Learn Through

    • Confidence
    • Self- Esteem
    • Resilience
    • Social Interaction
    • Independence
    • Curiosity
    • Coping with Hard Situations

    Benefits of Playing

    1. Improves Physical Health

Physical play, like running, skipping, and riding a bicycle, helps kids grow up and become healthier adults. It helps:

    • Good physical health
    • Agility
    • Stamina
    • Coordination
    • Balance

    2. Makes them “Team-Players”

Playing can help children learn how to interact with other people. It is good for a child to listen, pay attention, and share play experiences with others. It helps them explore how they feel, develop their own self-control and learn how to talk about themselves.

    3. Cognitive Development

Play enhances your child’s ability to think, understand, communicate, remember, imagine and work out what might happen next. Children want to learn how things work, and they learn best through play. Children at play are solving problems, creating, experimenting, thinking and learning all the time.

    Parenting that is fun

Through play, parents can connect fully with their children and have a lot of fun with them. You can help your child play but you should not be in charge of what happens. An adult should not make all of the decisions about how, what, and when their child plays.

Give them the freedom to be exactly who they are, and you can join in as well! Spending time playing with your child is especially good for your child’s cognitive development. That’s because playing together builds your relationship and sends a simple but powerful message – you are important to me.

This message is key to helping your child learn about who they are and where they fit in the world. It also gives your child confidence to keep exploring and learning about the world.
